A Storybook Fall Pharsalia Wedding

Pharsalia Wedding |

TYRO, VIRGINIA

Emelie & James could not have chosen a more perfect wedding venue for their cozy fall day.

Long before their wedding, Emelie described the vision for their photographs in a way that so perfectly matched the way the day actually felt.

"I think I really just want to be able to look at them and pick up on the magical/whimsical vibe, fairycore plus nature. We are in love with the mountains and the flowers at Pharsalia so having those incorporated would be amazing. I would like to capture the happiness and fun in our guests as well, especially with our closest friends"

She told me how much they loved the mountains, flowers, and peaceful outdoor spaces, and wanted their photographs to feel soft, joyful, and true to who they are.

For couples dreaming of a tucked away outdoor wedding, this venue offers something that is SO hard to find, breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountain views paired with intimate gardens and quiet corners that feel genuinely peaceful. It felt like the perfect extension of Emelie and James' personalities, and photographing their day made Pharsalia one of my very favorite Virginia wedding venues.

Why Pharsalia Is One of My Favorite Virginia Wedding Venues

As a Northern Virginia wedding photographer who leans soft, whimsical and sentimental, I am always looking for venues with tucked away corners that feel lived-in and cozy over formal and grandiose. One of the first things I noticed wasn't even the mountain views (which are unreal), it was all of the little corners tucked throughout the property. An iron bench almost wrapped in vines, a corner zinnia with a bird bath perfectly nestled, a stone wall surrounded by wildflowers with a gate leading to yet another flower filled pathway, bees buzzing everywhere. The landscaping at Pharsalia is magical. A fun fact about this venue is that it doubles as a flower farm, so your florals are done in-house and are as fresh and seasonal as it gets.

We can’t move on without mentioning that the sweeping Blue Ridge backdrop is incredible, but what makes photographing a wedding at Pharsalia so enjoyable is how much variety you can find within a short walk. There are hidden garden paths, vegetable gardens, a majestic willow tree, weathered stone, wooded trails, and open mountain overlooks that all feel connected without ever feeling repetitive. It feels less like moving from portrait location to portrait location and more like wandering through a storybook.

Because everything is right there for you, from the gardens to the mountain overlooks, you never have to interrupt the day by driving somewhere else for portraits. Couples can stay present with their guests while still having an incredibly varied gallery.

The property also helps a wedding day flow beautifully. The separate getting ready spaces allow both sides of the wedding party to relax without feeling crowded, while the historic manor house creates one of my favorite ceremony entrances to photograph. When those front doors open and the bride begins walking down the steps toward the ceremony, it is SUCH a moment.

A Wedding That Felt Like Them

Before the wedding, Emelie told me something I hear from tons of couples (like truly, most couples. I think I said this to my own wedding photographer seven years ago).

Emelie admitted that she sometimes gets in her head during photos, especially on such a big day with a million other things going on, and she worried about looking and feeling awkward. She and James both described themselves as quieter people who would appreciate plenty of direction so they could relax and simply enjoy being together.

This is such a normal way to feel, and honestly you shouldn’t ever have to worry about more than simply being together on your wedding day. This is why it is so key to find a photographer who makes you feel taken care of and guided.

Watching the two of them together, it became obvious that their biggest comfort was simply being beside one another. They weren't trying to perform for the camera. They leaned into each other naturally, laughed quietly together, and found little moments of peace even in the middle of a wedding day. I could tell they genuinely enjoyed being outdoors together surrounded by mountains, bees, birds chirping, and that made all the difference in their photos.

Their invitation suite featured woodland illustrations of bees, hedgehogs, and squirrels. Their color palette blended soft mint greens with warm autumn florals. Emelie's flowing bell sleeves felt almost ethereal as they caught the breeze throughout the day. Every detail felt so inspired by nature and the fairytale vibe they love so much.

Nothing was there because it was just trendy, everything reflected who they were.

Storybook Details at Pharsalia

The morning of their wedding, I had so much fun photographing E&J’s details! …Like way more fun than I usually have with just a flat lay board inside. After taking a walk around the property, I had a million ideas.

Their invitation suite looked perfectly at home resting on an iron bench wrapped in climbing vines. Emelie's shoes found their way into the Pharsalia’s tomato garden, almost as if they had wandered there themselves. I narrowly escaped being stung by many bees, but it was all worth it. I love when the venue becomes part of the story rather than simply serving as a backdrop.

A Quiet Moment Beneath the Willow Tree

One of the most sweetest parts of the day for me was Emelie & James’ private vows.

Although Emelie and James chose not to see each other before walking down the aisle, they wanted a private moment together. Beneath Pharsalia's beautiful willow tree, they stood back-to-back and exchanged vows without ever turning around.

For two people who genuinely seem their most relaxed, easygoing selves when they are together, it was the perfect morning reset. The rest of the day would be filled with family, friends, celebration, and happy noise.

If you're planning a wedding at Pharsalia and love the idea of preserving the emotion of your vows while still saving the first look for the ceremony, I can't recommend a first touch enough. It created one of the most intimate moments of the entire day.

A Ceremony with Blue Ridge Mountain Views

The ceremony space at Pharsalia is spectacular! Guests gathered overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains while autumn color stretched across the landscape behind them. Then the doors of the manor house opened, revealing Emelie before she walked down the aisle with both of her parents waiting at the bottom of the steps.

It was simple, but so emotional. James' aunt officiated the ceremony, making it feel even more personal, and the couple included a traditional Celtic knot ceremony, a beautiful reflection of the heritage and symbolism that had inspired so many of their wedding choices.

Cozy Autumn Details

Guests warmed up at a charming apple cider bar complete with cinnamon sticks, whipped cream, and cute little fall toppings as they arrived.

Every reception table featured fresh bread served with rosemary & butter, alongside table numbers illustrated with birds and woodland animals. Their signature cocktails, an Old Fashioned and a blackberry, lavender, and prosecco drink called the Blackberry Bliss, continued the romantic garden atmosphere that carried through the entire day.

It all felt truly welcoming, cozy & intentional.

One of My Favorite Photos of the Day

Photographers spend a lot of time watching the couple, sometimes I like watching everyone else! One of my favorite photographs from this wedding happened during the couple’s reception entrance.

While Emelie and James were being introduced, I glanced toward their parents for a quick sec, and the expressions on their faces said everything.

There was so much pride, joy, and love in that moment that it instantly became one of my favorite images from the entire gallery. Those are the kinds of photographs I find myself returning to years later, the ones that remind us a wedding day belongs just as much to all the people who love the couple so much.

The Unexpected Birdseed Toss

Another sweet moment, because not every meaningful moment goes exactly according to plan!

During the ceremony, guests were supposed to toss birdseed as Emelie and James walked back down the aisle. Somewhere along the way, the announcement got missed, and everyone just was too excited and forgot. Later, while family was already gathered for portraits, we realized we still had all the birdseed waiting beneath the ceremony chairs.

Instead of worrying about what didn't happen, everyone just lined the aisle one more time. Emelie and James walked through smiling as their favorite people tossed birdseed into the air around them, creating one of the happiest photographs of the day. Sometimes the unexpected moments become the ones everyone remembers.

Sunset at Pharsalia Is Worth Planning For

If I could offer one piece of advice to couples planning a Pharsalia wedding, it would be this: Leave time for sunset portraits.

As the last little bit of light sinks beneath the mountains, the colors in the gardens and the blue to pink skies reallyyyy show off. Nothing like blue hour over the Blue Ridge Mountains! E&J wandered through the gardens, then we made our way back to the ceremony sight, overlooking the mountains in the distance. I’m so glad Emelie and James had a chance to slow down together before returning to celebrate with everyone they loved, and these photos turned out so perfect.

One little tip for couples portraits on a wedding day: take photos in small sections throughout the day. We took portraits of Emelie & James already earlier in the day, so sunset photos came with zero pressure. In my opinion, golden hour photos should never come with pressure. By the time we reach sunset, it should feel less like structured portrait time and more like a little moment for you two to enjoy some quiet together in a beautiful place.

Maybe you’ve already ditched your veil and/or your shoes, maybe your bouquet is struggling with the heat, and your makeup isn’t perfect anymore, and that is all okay. These photos are so much more genuine when they are free-flowing, effortless, lived-in and more about atmosphere, joy & connection.

Planning Your Own Pharsalia Wedding?

After photographing Emelie and James' wedding, it's easy to understand why couples fall in love with this venue. I absolutely fell in love with this venue.

If you're considering Pharsalia for your own wedding, a little recap from a photographer:

  • Plan time to explore the gardens during portraits, you'll find beautiful little corners around every turn.

  • Build sunset portraits into your timeline. The mountain views are absolutely worth it.

  • If you like the idea of a private moment together before your ceremony, the willow tree in the front yard is a perfect place to do that.

  • Lean into the venue's natural beauty rather than competing with it. Whether your style is romantic, whimsical, or classic, the property does so much of the work for you.

I've photographed weddings across Virginia, and Pharsalia is one of those rare places I hope to return to again and again. It combines thoughtful spaces, beautiful mountain views, peaceful gardens, and an atmosphere that encourages couples to actually slow down and enjoy their wedding day.
